What's It Takes To Be A Leader By estee-lauder.perfumes-mall.com
Do you know what it takes to be a leader of your people? Do you know what a leader is and what a leader should be doing continuously? Let's look at leadership from the experiences and words of successful CEOs, a famous military leader, and a President of the United States. First, we'll hear from George S. Patton, a four star general in the U.S. Army who served in battle in World War II in North Africa, Sicily, and the European Theater. Second, we'll add wisdom from Lee Iacocca, retired CEO of Chrysler and father of the Ford Mustang. Third, we'll get some insights from former President Ronald Reagan. Fourth, we will take a look at Hugh L. McColl, Jr., the audacious North Carolina banker who built America's first coast to coast banking operation, which is 50 times bigger than the two state Carolinas banks he ran originally. He made more than 100 bank acquisitions. His Marine Corps training shows. He never gave up and always wound up in control of the acquired bank. All four of these men were bold leaders. There are 16 gems of business wisdom from these incredible leaders. 1. A leader must be a visionary. He/she needs a futuristic look at a business and move step by step toward that vision. A leader can't be enslaved by the past or bogged down in the present. He/she needs to think somewhat outside the box. McColl claims that a leader's clear vision must be communicated in a clear way "using terms understood by everyone." And a higher authority than Hugh McColl or General Patton, God, says in the Bible, "without vision, the people perish." 2. A leader must have curiosity, listening to advice inside and outside his/her inner circle, says Lee Iacocca. Wisdom and open minds are required to discern if such advice is right. Never limit yourself to advice only from people who think like you. 3. A leader must be creative, willing to go out on a limb, according to Iacocca. Are you willing to take a risk and go out on a limb, or do you prefer to sit meekly under a tree? 4. A leader must know right from wrong and do the right thing. This is another piece of Iacocca advice. It's impossible to dispute this, but it is often hard to do it. 5. A leader must have courage. Iacocca says this, and he practiced it all throughout his career. In one of his Chrysler commercials, he concluded, saying, "if you can find a better
car, buy it." That's gutsy. 6. A leader must hold deep convictions, including fire in his/her belly, passion. This is another Iacocca gem. Lukewarm and wishy-washy don't cut it. 7. A leader must have charisma, the ability to inspire others to follow him or her, says Iacocca. McColl says that a leader must "lead followers to a great victory or triumph or some place they can't go by themselves." McColl cautions that "you're no stronger than your team's weakest link. You must not leave even one of your followers behind." 8. A leader must be competent and surround himself with people who know what they're doing. Iacocca adds, "I hire people brighter than me, then get out of the way." 9. A leader must be decisive. General Patton said, "Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way." He also said, "If everybody thinks alike, nobody is thinking." 10. A leader must be excellent and require excellence from his/her team. 11. A leader must be an "actor," able to communicate with his/her people. So said General Patton. 12. A leader must direct his people wisely. Patton said, "a leader must never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and you'll be surprised by their ingenuity." 13. A leader must view his/her business with focus on three things: people, products, and profit (sales minus expenses), Iacocca claims. 14. A leader must make efficient use of time. Iacocca says, "The ability to concentrate and use time well is everything." 15. A leader must be sensitive and opportunistic to changing social, political, technical and demographic developments and trends, adapting these to the business, as appropriate. This success principle was stated by two Harvard Business School writers, Anoty Mayo and Nitkin Nohria, after studying the careers of Henry Ford, Ray Kroc (McDonalds), Estee Lauder (cosmetics) and Jack Welch (General Electric). 16. A leader must be optimistic, said President Reagan. He described pessimism as a "disease," when talking with Margaret Thatcher, then Prime Minister of Great Britain. John J. Alquist, along with his wife, Shirley, owns and operates Alquist Enterprises. It offers professional public speaking, writing and authoring, as well as business consulting and meeting faciliation for strategic planning meetings.
